Another one from the box of the lost VHS-tapes. I wonder which other dusty tapes I´ll find ;-) This one is really one that brings up some memories. Conceived together with my former partner Daniel Hildmann in 1997 we planned these urban TV screens for the IOC (International Olympic Comittee) for the Millennium celebrations. For various reasons it finally didn´t happen. The plan was to install Helium filled ballons, stuffed with 1,5 tons of video and projection equipment inside, in the center of every Olympic city in the world...
Another one from the box of the lost VHS-video tapes - now on YouTube. I made the film during my Schindler stipend at the MAK Center for Art and Architecture in Los Angeles 1997. Previously to this release it was presented at the Schindler House in Cochran Avenue, at Ririkit Tiravanijas show in the Secession in Vienna and some other places.
The concept of the film is based on a nightdrive through Los Angeles along an earthquake fault line. This fault line directly crossed the corner of the intersection of two streets: Venice Blvd. and Florence Ave. It was exactly that corner where 1992 the Rodney King riots erupted... The text in the middle section is a summary of events two years prior to this event, which caused the most destructive American riot of the 20th century.
One detail: The guitar piece was written and played by myself with an old Casio guitar synthesizer. The helicopter sound also comes from the guitar...
It was only on VHS-video before. Now, after 10 years its available the first time on YouTube! Our project for the Avantgarde Fashion Biennale in Florence. I might aswell have forgotten it, but then I found a box with all the old tapes again... Unfortunately the sound is really crap - but at least one gets an impression.
The project shows fragments of the installation we did in Florence with fashion designer Kostas Murkudis. This space installation was a great experiment done with Daniel Hildman and the sound designers Andres Bosshard and Miki Yui. It was all about cinema and fashion. We decided to make a cinema without images. A "blind movie" so to say! In the old railway station the "Statione Leopolda" we made a 20 meter long an 6 meter high screen from phosphorescent textile. The fabric was a custom production by Schoeller, the company that produces special fabrics for instance for Nike. Andres an Miki used small speakers, which normally are used for watches, for the installation. The small and thin plates were mounted with magnets and gave in conjunction with subweavers in the ceiling a great acoustic effect, when playing a piece of Mozart, or a "heartbeat symphony". From time to time a flash of light enhanced the effect of the fabric, so it would glow in the dark...
The manifesto, taken from the book "Space Between People – How the virtual changes physical architecture". The manifesto is the basis for the preparation for my contributions for two events in October: the Urban Art Biennale in Bordeaux in October 2009 and for the opening talk at the Theodor-Heuss-Akademie.
