Saloniki Soccer Club Art Project by Stephan Doesinger.

They stand for a relaxed way of living, which attracts every year innumerable tourists:
The stray dogs of Greece.

They characterise the Greek landscape for centuries, in a similar way as the sacred cows define the public space in India.

But since the dogs in Greece are of no cultural value, they are neglected or even hated.

Now, in the run-up to the Summer Olympics 2004 the stray animals are even more threatened. According to media reports(*) and observations from animal rescue organisations thousands of strays have already died agonising deaths or just "vanished".

The reason, why these animals have to disappear seems obvious: When the worlds` media attention will be focused on Greece, the country wants to be prepared to present a clean image. But how do brutal killings of these creatures fit into the image of a modern society?

The legendary stray dogs become the main actors in a project entitled "Saloniki Soccer Club Art Project" initiated by the Austrian artist Stephan Doesinger (35), who is based in Munich.
In the center of Thessaloniki, which is the host-city of the Olympic Soccer Games, he puts together a "soccer-team" of 15 dogs.

Stephan Doesinger refers to the historical traditions of the culture of decorating animals. With the help of local people the dogs are dyed in bright colours, featuring the numbers of soccer tricots. - Numbers that we already know from stars like Beckham, Ronaldo or others.

While soccer players from all over the world will fight for goals, the dogs on the streets keep on doing what they did for centuries: Nothing.

With this project Stephan Doesinger not only wants to save the lives of these dogs. He aims to change the public awareness and the meaning of public space. If the stray dogs would be perceived in Greece as a part of their cultural identity the animals might receive a more positive public attention.

Therefore he invites Greek artists to document the dogs lifes during the Olympic Games. Their photographic works shall be exhibited and published in a book.

Sie stehen für eine geruhsamere Lebensart, die jedes Jahr unzählige
Touristen anzieht: Die streunenden Hunde Griechenlands.

Sie prägen die griechische Landschaft, so wie es die heiligen Kühe in Indien tun.

Anlässlich der Sommer Olympiade 2004 geht es den Tieren nun an den Kragen.

Laut Medienberichten(*) und Beobachtungen zahlreicher Tierschutz
Organisationen wurden bereits tausende Tiere auf oft grausamste Weise getötet.

Der Grund, wieso die Streuner gerade anlässlich der Olympischen Spiele verschwinden sollen, ist offensichtlich: Wenn das Augenmerk der Weltöffentlichkeit auf Griechenland gerichtet ist, will das Land ein sauberes Image repräsentieren.

In seinem neuesten Projekt "Saloniki Soccer Club Art Project" macht der österreichische Künstler Stephan Doesinger (35), der in München lebt,
diese Hunde zu Haupt-Akteuren: Im Zentrum Thessalonikis, wo die olympischen Fußball Spiele stattfinden, stellt er aus 15 Hunden ein eigenes Team zusammen.

Er greift auf die kulturgeschichtliche Tradition des Dekorierens von Tieren zurück und verziert die Hunde mit Farben und Trikot Nummern, wie man sie von Stars wie Beckham, Ronaldo und anderen kennt. Über die gesamte Dauer der Spiele werden die "Soccer Dogs" unübersehbar sein, sofern sie nicht auch auf dubiose Weise "verschwinden".

Während in Thessalonikis Stadion Fußball Spieler aus aller Welt um Tore kämpfen, machen die Hunde auf der Straße das, was sie immer schon tun: Nichts.

Mit diesem Projekt will er nicht nur die Hunde retten und das Stadtbild verändern. Für ihn geht es um den Kampf der Bilder: Wie passen brutal getötete Kreaturen zum sauberen Image eines modernen Landes?

Deshalb lädt er griechische Künstler dazu ein, diese Hunde über die Dauer der Olympiade zu dokumentieren. Deren Arbeiten sollen im Anschluß ausgestellt und in einem Buch veröffentlicht werden.
