How we develop concepts and spatial narratives
First mock-up room at MOOONS Hotel, Vienna: Studio Doesinger & hildmannwilke developed the concept for the first prototype room of a future lean luxury hotel brand and delivered its full realization together with its partners.
Home for Explorers was the first guiding idea in our internal concept process, combining Simon Sinek’s idea of purpose with Charles and Ray Eames’ Powers of Ten to explore the project across different scales. It marked the starting point of the brand narrative before the final claim was developed.
Sleep weightless highlights one of the core features of the MOOONS concept recovery through sleep. The idea is simple guests should wake up restored, 1000% energized, and ready for what comes next.
Get ready for something new expresses the idea of recharging curiosity, confidence, and energy so guests feel open to new people, new places, and new experiences.
This concept focuses on the transition from sleep to going out. At its center is the mini spa boudoir, a zone designed for refreshment, self care, and transformation.
Instead of filling the room with unnecessary furniture, our concept focuses on what guests actually use. By integrating the desk into the mini spa boudoir, we save space, create a calmer layout, and strengthen the idea of refreshment, self care, and getting ready to go out.
These photographs of the moon became an early inspiration for the MOOONS concept. They showed how light can reveal the moon in many different moods and colors and inspired us to bring this sense of diversity, magic, mystery, and poetry into the hotel experience.
These AI renderings helped us explore the role of light as a central design element in the MOOONS concept. They revealed the idea of two distinct zones and reinforced the insight that the moon only comes alive through light, inspiring the concept of the light side of the moon.
We wanted to create a strong connection between the boudoir and the beauty mirror. This led us to the idea of using a one way mirror, although at first we did not know whether it would be possible to place light behind it and create a transition from mirror to light object. At that point, we brought Sebastian Hepting into the project to explore the technical feasibility of the idea.
Using original NASA data of the lunar surface, we developed the idea of turning the moon into a tactile and spatial experience. The moon became a miniature object that could be touched, used as a bathroom door handle, and staged with light and shadow so that it felt as if a glowing celestial body were floating inside the room. In this way, the MOOONS experience became not only visual but also haptic, imaginative, and designed to spark curiosity.
The quarter sofa turns into a UFO through the mirrored corner. This playful spatial illusion opened the room in an imaginative way and added another layer of curiosity and wonder to the MOOONS experience.
Testing this idea in plan
We eventually structured the room into a Dark Side of the Moon and a Light Side of the Moon.
After testing different spatial constellations, we placed the Light Side of the Moon in the main room, while the entrance area with the bar and boudoir became the Dark Side of the Moon.
Our material choices were guided by one central idea finding surfaces that would bring out the effect of light in the strongest possible way.

How we make your dreams come true
For the walls, we chose a material with a relief-like surface that feels soft in appearance while remaining durable and suitable for everyday hotel use. This allowed us to combine atmosphere, light, and practicality
The boudoir connects the sleeping area and the bathroom. It is compact, domestic, and gives the 20 square meter room a distinct character. A small pantry, coffee machine, and practical amenities complete the setting.
Together with our partners, we created a fully programmed lighting concept with different light scenes that turn the room into an immersive experience. By orchestrating all light sources as one system, the room gained a unique atmosphere and a distinctive identity.
The MOOONS lamp became a defining element of the hotel’s identity. By lighting the wall behind, its front element, and the mirror itself, it creates a constantly changing effect. Because the system is fully digitally controlled, many different light scenes were possible, even though we ultimately focused on a selected few.
One lighting scene simulates animated fire. With hundreds of individually controlled LEDs, the lamp creates a soft and comforting atmosphere that gives the room a rare sense of warmth and poetry.
The poetry of light extends into other parts of the room, including the pantry, where it becomes part of the overall atmosphere.
Shine your light is a message for the guest to feel radiant, confident, and filled with positive energy.
We also developed a custom made light switch for the room, allowing guests to move easily through different lighting scenes, from animated sunrise to liquid copper or sunset, and transform the space into their own personal MOOONS world
