MOOONS Hotel

Together with HildmannWilke Architekten, we asked ourselves how hospitality can be reimagined. What if the MOOONS hotel were a home for explorers? To be an explorer means to stay curious. Yet how do we spark curiosity when we are constantly overwhelmed by information that leaves little space for wonder?

Follow us on a journey from the dark side of the moon to its radiant, illuminated face.

One Process.
From Vision to Reality.

This project is a great example of our Design and Build approach, as we not only conceived and designed the vision, but also realized it. It ensures design integrity from the first idea to the finished space. The result: A place that allows guests to rediscover curiosity, to feel recharged, and to see the world with fresh eyes.

Shine Your Light

At MOOONS, the guest is at the center of everything. The room adapts to each person’s mood and rhythm, helping them feel confident, energized and ready to shine in their best light wherever their journey leads.

The design concept of MOOONS is rooted in the idea of creating energy through experience. Rather than decorating, we wanted to shape an atmosphere that changes with light, reflection, and perception. A central element of this approach is the use of a semi-transparent mirror – a so-called one-way mirror – that acts as both reflection and depth, depending on the direction of light. From one side it appears as a perfect mirror, from the other it reveals what lies behind. This interplay of visibility and concealment became a key part of the room’s spatial dramaturgy. The idea began with a question: could a mirror also be a source of light? We wanted to explore whether a one-way mirror, a so-called spy mirror, could serve a double function, acting both as reflection and illumination. At that time, no one knew if it would work.

We approached lighting designer Sebastian Hepting, formerly with Ingo Maurer, and asked him to test the concept. When he discovered that light could indeed pass through the mirror surface, it was clear that we wanted to develop this object together. Based on his earlier patented Mood Moon lamp, Sebastian reinterpreted the design using the semi-transparent mirror as a new light-emitting surface. Our goal was to create a wide range of moods and give guests intuitive control through a single, simple interface.

We then developed a custom dial that connects the entire room’s lighting system, allowing guests to seamlessly adjust eight different scenes, from sunrise to fireplace, through one clear and tactile gesture.

Through this process, design and technology merge into an experience that encourages discovery. The room becomes a field of exploration in itself. A place where light reveals hidden layers, where reflection turns into depth, and where curiosity is quietly reignited.
